PROGRESSIVE CANDIDATES AND VOICES

This is a roadmap to voices who speak truth to power, and a future vision of freedom.

Updated as of July 2018.

Abby Martin

Martin's a keen reporter for teleSUR's investigative journalism segment The Empire Files. She is also founder of Media Roots, "reporting from outside party lines".

The Empire Files provides a closer glimpse at American society's flaws and possible solutions for them.

Abby co-ran Breaking the Set on RT until 2015, which had been a nuanced show about establishment politics.

She makes it her mission to expose US imperialism...and highlight progressive alternatives elsewhere.

Ajamu Baraka

He is a prominent human rights activist, grassroots organizer and former vice-presidential nominee for the Green Party. His leadership is indescribably valuable to progressive politics, especially as Black Alliance for Peace National Organizer.

Ajamu Baraka also founded the US Human Rights Network, the first domestic organization holding United States to an international rights standard.

This follows the legacy of W.E.B. DuBois' and William Patterson's UN proposal We Charge Genocide.

His words are radical, anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist--a rally for change. They found a home on Black Agenda Report and Counterpunch too.

MARGARET KIMBERLEY

Kimberley asks the heavy questions as senior columnist for BAR; her section is rightly titled 'Freedom Rider'. "Who's the fascist?" she writes prior to the 2016 presidential election.

"But Democrats aren’t much better. They pretend to work on behalf of human, civil and economic rights but those claims are lies.

They are meant to hide their partnerships with corporate America, very wealthy individuals and the worldwide imperialist project."

Pepe Escobar

Pepe is a geopolitical analyst and investigative journalist from Brazil. He frequently writes for the Asia Times, RT, Sputnik, Tom's Dispatch and formerly Al Jazeera plus The Nation.

His books and articles include Globalistan, Obama Does Globalistan, Empire of Chaos, The West and the Rest in a One-Model-Fits-All World-all indictments of America as a failing world power.

"If Washington is now stunned and operating on autopilot, that’s in part because, historically speaking, its moment as the globe’s “sole superpower” or even “hyperpower” barely outlasted Andy Warhol’s notorious 15 minutes of fame." (Truth-Out)

 Chris Hedges

Hedges is a visionary voice with a clear view on globalization's tie to American plutocracy. Chris was a foreign correspondent for the New York Times 15 years, reporting on several wars in Africa, the Balkans, Middle East and Latin America.

Hedges is now columnist for Truthdig, and half of the progressive team Zero Hedge.

Fascist America

His writings cover a wide range of topics, but center on political terrorism, revolution and war. Empire of Illusion unveils a sinister trend behind American cultural values.

America's Living a Fantasy

Hedges is a fierce advocate for press freedom and challenges the police state directly through law. Hedges v. Obama involved a lawsuit against Obama's administration for the NDAA, or National Defense Authorization Act. He and his attorney Carl Mayer criticized the provisions that allowed military to jail anyone considered a terrorist-no evidence or trial.

Hedges concluded the NDAA could use indefinite detention to hold citizens-whistleblowers.

"It overturns over 200 years of law, which has kept the military out of domestic policing...under the 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force Act, some of this was already happening. This essentially codifies this very extreme interpretation of this 2001 act into law." (Democracy Now!)

Legal Reader goes over the case's importance more here.

 Tara Houska

Tara Houska is a Couchiching First Nation eco-activist and tribal rights attorney based out of D.C. Houska advised Sanders' campaign. She's a columnist at Indian Country Today, formerly HuffPost and the Guardian.

Honor the Earth stresses awareness for anti-Native environmental action and indigenous communities in America. They also provide economic and organizational support to Native American eco-initiatives. Honor the Earth was founded by three brave women: Native activist Winona LaDuke and the Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. Tara is campaign director.

Houska is also founding board member for Not Your Mascots, an educational advocacy organization fighting racial stereotypes in U.S. media.

Tara strives for indigenous and civil rights on every level. She attended the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests. Several water protectors were brutalized by police forces there-herself included.

Environmental Activists Tara Houska and Winona LaDuke Discuss Dakota Access Pipeline

"We’ve got a state actively and openly protecting the interests of Big Oil, and we’ve got a Congress that’s directly controlled. there’s so many campaign donations that come from Big Oil.

The way you’re going to make peace out here is to take care of your environment and to treat people with dignity. It’s having local food. It’s not having your food owned by Monsanto, and it’s not putting a bunch of pesticides, and it’s not exporting all your oil and destroying your water."

 Cornel West

Dr. West is one of the most prominent Black intellectual, Democratic political activists in America. Cornel is a philosophy professor and a social critic who has accurately assessed the U.S. problematic state for four decades. He has taught at Princeton, Harvard, the University of Paris and Yale. Dr. West preaches a need for justice in every meaning of the word.

"Those of us who are outside [the system] and free, we’re going to tell the truth. We’re going to be honest. We’re going to have a certain kind of moral and spiritual and intellectual integrity...we’re not in any way going to become well adjusted to this injustice out here." (Democracy Now!)

West is called radical by Democratics and Republicans. What's radical about a realistic view on a sick society? It should not escape notice his primary critics are the political and economic elite.

"There will never ever be a tradition that flows under the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. without rich spirituality that's then tied to social activism, that's tied to formation of character and personality, that's then tied to politics and economic quest." (Chicago Tribune)

Though he had high hopes for Obama as president, Dr. West doesn't share any illusions about him.

When I call the president a black puppet of Wall Street, I was really talking about the degree to which Wall Street had a disproportionate amount of influence on his policies." (CBS News)

"Human history for the most part has been a cycle of hatred and revenge and indifference and callousness to the weak and vulnerable. But we're experiencing an awakening. That's what happens in America. Right when America's about to go under, you get a spiritual and moral awakening."
